I can hardly believe that I fell for the scam that just cost me $20,000. Not me, as smart and savvy as I thought I was. I guess I’m swallowing my pride in order to tell this because it feels therapeutic. Earlier today, as I had just gotten out of my car in a small shopping center, a woman called out to me to get my attention. When she approached me, she said I had dropped my wallet when I got out of my car. I don’t carry a wallet, but thought I might have dropped an auto manual from the front seat. When she showed me the zippered case, it had a note, in Arabic script, taped to it, and the name “Abdul” at the bottom. Another woman, who allegedly had picked it up from the ground, had come over and opened the case, she said, to find more identification. Well, there was a rubber banded stack,4 inches thick, of $1000 bills, at which we collectively gasped, along with bearer bonds and lottery tickets.

Greed sucked me in, although my antenna kept waving and my better judgment shouted “Walk away — fast!”. I got totally sucked in; at every step of this whole scheme, it was as though I was standing outside myself but could not stop. From what I have now read at a number of websites, this was a classic “Pigeon Drop Found Money” scam. I know I will never recoup this money, but I would really like to help the authorities catch these predators.
