I recieved a letter from the Safeco INsurance Group address is 4438 Holden Way Ne, Seattle WA 96445-2643.
The letter stated that my name had been drawn in the annual Consumer’s Promotional Draw, just from shopping at major stores, and that I had to take the check enclosed and cash it, then wire the money to Canada to pay the non-canadian residential tax.
They gave a claim agent Leanna Fox:(604) 729-8348 to call M-F 7-6 PST, and all tax payments given to Kayla Sonders 2289 Treasure Ave Thunder, BAy Canada
They inclosed a check for $4980.00 and when I called the agent she stated I won $250,000 and that this check would cover the taxes I would need to pay to Canada.
Ok, so I called this Leanna Fox, and she gave me her deal, and said all I had to do was to take the check to the bank and call her back, telling her I deposited the check. She told me after she receives the information that the check cleared, then I would need to wire the money to Kayla Sonders at the aforementioned information.
So I’m looking at this check, and the bank the check is from is The Northern Trust Company Chicago, IL Payable through Oakbrook Terrace IL. So, I call Northern Trust Co – www.northerntrust.com
1 Oakbrook Ter, Oakbrook Terrace – (630) 691-2200, and speak with them in regards to a check I received from Safeco Insurance Group, and they informed me the check is fraudulent.
I call back ‘Leanna Fox’, and I start to tell her that I called the bank on the check, and before I can get out the word ‘fraudulent’, she hung up on me.
Please do NOT put this check in your bank. If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

I almost bought into this. Thank God I thoought this as too good to be true. I did a Yahoo search on SafeCo Insurance Group and found that, while SafeCo Insurance Group is an authentic business entity, there was a scam involving their name. The $4,8980.00 check was fraudulent. I recieved the letter stating that I was the recipient of a $250,00.00 prize drawing and that this check was to cover expenses and “Non-Resident Canadian Taxes on my winnings. I’ve called the numbers provided in this letter and as soon as I mentioned the fraud, was hung up on. They even have a supposed American representative with a good SafeCo number. She also hung up on me after telling me that I should wait and see if the check cleared my bank. I did a search on that phone number. It’s a cell phone number out of B.C. Canada. the other phone numbers turned out the same. My bank is allowing the deposit to stand in case the check clears, but won’t charge me any fees if it doesn’t. Please warn everyone in your address book so they won’t be taken by this scam. They will want them to put the check in their account and immediately wire or get a money order and send the taxes to them. this scam, if it takes enough people, will make them rich as the funds sent to them will be authentic. the people that do this will be resposible for the funds if the check doesn’t clear their bank.

I have done a search on all the phone numbers provided in my letter from SafeCo Insurance Group, 4438 Holden way Ne, Seattle, Wa 96445-2643. They are all cell phone numbers generated out of Greater Vancouver, BC, Canada. The numbers I checked were (778) 320-8099, (778) 317-0492, (778)881-0246. The number supposedly listed as a “real” SafeCo number, (778) 317-0492, is NOT a real SafeCo number! Don’t fal;l for this. Tell everyone you know about this scam! Let’s prevent these people from preying on innocent elderly and disabled people.
June 16th, 2009 at 9:50 am
My apologies. My 7:46am posting should have read that the check I recieved was $4,980.00, not $4,8980.00.
June 17th, 2009 at 10:43 am
I too just received that same check….Too good to be true!! Damn
June 19th, 2009 at 11:50 am
I too received a check in the mail for $4,975.67. I called the agent and she stated she was on the phone with another client. When i called back to speak with her, she didnt pick up the phone. So i started doing research over the internet. Im glad to know now its a scam. Which is what I thought. Just wanted to make sure. I will warn all of my friends.

I just received a very similar check in the mail. Same story as above, but the name of the company states Great America Insurance on the letter and Great American Life Insurance Company on the check.
They are also out of Seattle, WA. The check states it is coming from OH. The bank on the check states National City Bank.
It also states I won 250,000, same story, annual consumers promotional draw from major retailers. Check inclosed was for $4991.00. Check looks legit but something seemed off so I started doing research.
Just letting everyone know these people are stating multiple company names and multiple bank names on the checks.

Same here. I already know if it seems too good to be true it is so I searched Google and found this site. I don’t understand how these people can get away with this for so long and so widely. Cell phone owners and locations are easy to trace. What agencies are out there protecting consumers from these illegal frauds?
June 27th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Same Here. I got a check to day from the Great American Life Insurance Company from Cincinnati, OH from the annual Consumer’s Promotional Draw in the amount of $4991.00. I’ve seen these kind of scams before so I decided to do some research and found that the company is legit just not the promotion as seen from here. Thanks a bunch. I’ll be sure to warn family and friends.

I just received a similar letter and check in the mail for 4989.30 and the letter states that i won through an annual consumers promotional draw based out of canada.. The company said it was through A.I.G Annuity insurance in Seattle Wa. Same as all above complaints. Too bad its not real.It even has some old guys picture, name and saying hes the president and gives a phone number for him.. Thinking on giving to my local police department and maybe they can post something in the paper so no unsuspecting person decides this is legit and cashes the check. Especially the elderly since they are the ones hit hardest by these crooks.

There using names of real companies, or creating them themselves, opening accts that are real to steal money from consumers, there names are a fraud as well, when I recieved a check from Safeco it was real but once deposited game over, Thank God I felt on the inside of me something was wrong, It looked good and it sounded good but it was no good, I talked to a friend of mine that said to me check it out. I did the lady on the other end of the phone wanted to know if the check had been deposited that was the first thing she said to me,and thats all it took.
July 2nd, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Same deal got letter talked with a lady, she told me to deposit check
it was money to aide me in canada taxes and expances of the delivery
of the $250,000.00 check. I have deposited the check after it clears I
am to call her back, and she will put me in contact with a canada tax agent. don’t know what will happen now. I would think that if the check
in no good that my bank would advise.

The company said it was through A.I.G Annuity insurance in Seattle Wa. Same as all above complaints. what I did I call the number that was listed on the letter and the lady told me to deposit the check or cash it. And then she told me to call her after I have done that and I did the only thing that I did it cash or deposit the check to verify if was a scam or what. I told her that I did cash the check she told me to go to a money gram/ western union to sent the tax money that was$3,823.25. to sent it to a person name Amanda Boardman in Canada. she also told me that to tell the western union personal that I was sending the money a family member because the western union/ money gram charge more is if not a family member. can you believe that she wanted me so save money.
July 8th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Me too, same scam – the AIG Annuity Insurance CO. Annnual Consumer’s Draw version. Legitimate looking AIG check from BNY Mellon Trust of Delaware, Newark, Delaware for $4989.30. I’m still holding the check and after calling the “claim agent” and telling her I would not cash the check without further investigation, she said she would provide me with more detailed information if I would call her back same time next day. I will keep you posted on what happens. I would like to hear from those who deposited the check and what has happened since, particularly Stan,Jack,Not So Stupid and anyone else. Also who is legally responsible once the bank accepts the check and informs you that it is good, has cleared, etc.?
July 14th, 2009 at 6:19 am
I am working with a client that fell for this scam and is now severely in debt. I still have not figured out how it works but I am going to accompany her to the bank today to try and get to the bottom of it. She did deposit the check and then somehow the entire amount (plus some) was taken OUT of her account. The company is ‘the Great American Insurance Co.’. Pleas, do NOT cash these checks.
July 16th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
so what happens if you cash the check and it clears so you withdraw the money and do not wire it to the people in “canada”??
July 17th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
It’s been just a few hours since I opened the same plain white envelope with a Canadian Stamp, inclosed notification of $250,000 prize from AIG Annuity Insurance and check for $4997.85 from BNY Mellon Trust of Delaware. I was making big plans for that money, but decided to check on line to see if it was legit. We all know now it isn’t. I’m going to deposit it anyway. If the check clears, I keep the $$ and let that be that. I could sure use and extra 5K right now! Then that’s as far as I’ll go. If enough of us keep the check without sending the “taxes” back, maybe it will put them out of “business”! Let’s make them the Suckers!!
July 21st, 2009 at 2:10 pm
I just got a check today too, but it was from State Farm Companies Foundation and the letter head is from trustnet. What happens if you just cash the check but don’t send any
money?
July 21st, 2009 at 2:13 pm
And the amount I “won” is 50,000 not 250,000. And also the check is for 4,200.00. How can we get these people investigated before they rip off anyone else and why doesn’t the FBI get involved?!!!!
July 21st, 2009 at 4:38 pm
I got the check today – mine is from Great America Insurance company – the numer they listed is out of service…I do like not so stupid’s idea – even if you do deposit it dont use it – then if anything happens the money is there to cover the expenses of them taking it back – just let it sit in the account…its an idea – but I know in the long run we will get screwed in one way or another…lol but I do thank you all for leaving yoru stories – I have been searching for other ppl that have gotten the same checks…
July 21st, 2009 at 6:51 pm
I too have recieved a check from Great American Life Incurance Company for almost five grand! The letter with it though made absolutely no sense! It was for about 5 grand and had the same directions on calling a claim agent first. So I looked up the Insurance company and it looks legit, but none of the phone numbers on the website match the phone numbers on the letter. The phone number was 1-778-881-0246 which has been named by other people leaving their comments. I am so glad there are websites like this one so we can help each other out! I knew it looked and sounded too fishy! What assholes!

I, too, received a plain white envelope with a $5k legit check…it cleared my bank immediately..I then transferred the $ to a new acct and closed the savings. Did not call the ‘agent’ at all and will see what happens next….”Jerry 6/16″, “Jack 6/28″ and “not so stupid” – how’d it turn out 4 u? any updates?

Got the same check in mail.
First, it’s a check for almost $5000.00 in ‘regular mail’ from a company I’ve never heard of.
Second, they want me to cash the check and wire the money to someone else. Why can’t they do that?
Third, I don’t shop at any of the places listed.
The deal is….
The ‘letter / check mailers’ are hoping that you have standing with your bank to cash the check. They’re hoping you do cash the check and wire them the money.
They don’t care what happens next (they now have another $5000.00), but here’s what happens next :
The check bounces and you’re out the $5000.00 that you wired to them. And your bank is mad at you.
July 28th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Any updates from the guys who deposited the check and didn’t send in the money?
I have a check and was thinking of opening up a seperate account just to deposit it and keep the money.
August 4th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
The same thing just happened to me and now my bank is closing my account. they said even thou its not my fault that whenever there is a issue with fraud the account is automatically close. no if ands of butts about it. this is really unfair and we should do something about this.
August 11th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
the same thing just happened to me too i just got a check for 4,965.44$ from bristol west insurance group. i have no idea why i got this check, im just glad i looked into it first. what i am going to do is cash the check (if it goes through) and then open a new bank account and put it in a savings account…and ill just let time go by and see what happens, i wont touch the money until enough time has gone by.
August 12th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
I have received the same check as you did Miluska. Also the same amount I really want to cash it and not do anything else but I want to find out with the other 3 people that have done that. But its that thing we always hear if it sounds to good to be true its not true.
August 14th, 2009 at 12:10 am
I just got screwed (mentally) because of an identical Bristol West Insurance Group check in the amount of…can you guess? Yep, $4965.44. I was supposed to deposit it tomorrow, wait for it to clear, then send the non Canadian taxes to Canada agents. Then, of course, the $250,000 would come rolling in.
This is a real kick in the ribs to someone who is not working and needs extra medical attention. They seem to know who to hit… I just wish there was a way to hit back. Good luck all……..Robyn
August 19th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
well i deposited the check and it was on hold.. and they said that i was gonna have the funds available 8 days after…so today is the day when im supposed to have the funds available so i called my bank and it said i had 4965.44…i dont know if the check cleared yet but all im gonna do is wait, because even tho it says the funds are available it doenst mean it cleared the bank, so ill wait, and will keep you guys posted to tell you what happened!
August 26th, 2009 at 3:06 am
Is anyone investigating this? Did you guys notice that the check and the letter came in a plain white envelope with NO RETURN ADDRESS? Could this possibly have something to do with mail fraud? I guess the old saying is true, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
September 5th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
well the check didnt clear my bank. i didnt use any of the money, so nothing happened.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:37 am
This is now the third one of these scam checks that I have received–haven’t tried to cash the latest one but sure would like to know what happened to those who did. Any answers?
September 12th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Just got the same scam, check from Life Investors Insurance Company of America in Iowa, written on The Bank of New York (Delaware). Both the Life Insurance & Bank have recently merged and have slightly different names. Thinking about taking the check to a a check cashing service.
September 14th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Well, I recieved the same letter from Life Investors Insurance of America out of Tacoma Washington. I hit the white pages and did reverse phone number search and has numbers coming out of British Columbia. As soon as I opened it up, I knew it was a scam just for the simple fact that they wanted me to “pay” the MANDATORY Non-Canadian Residential Tax. I looked this up along with address provided with no luck. Once I typed in CONSUMERS PROMOTIONAL DRAW, I came across this site. I’m interested in a few comments that have deposited the check in one account and once it clears, close the account and move on. Has there been any reprocussions from this? I’d like to turn it around and stick it to them! If it works I say any body getting these letters do the same!
September 14th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Just got the same check from Life Investors Insuranc ecompany of America in Tacoma, WA. The check is from Iowa where apparently the company is located. We deposited the check to see what will happen. We called the contact and she told us that she is not BSing us and that this is true, after all this is her job and what she does and wouldn’t BS anyone. I told her I was very leary and she instructed me to call her back the next morning and she would put me in contact with the CFO to verify.
Oh I am going to call her back. I told her that I have heard about these scams where money is sent, then we are asked to send money elsewhere only to find out that the check doesn’t clear the bank and people are out thousands.
Her name is apparently Angela Lawrence 778-882-4651 and Tax Agent is Kiana Andres in Pennsylvania. My letter also has a picture of a Regional Manager at the bottom and a phone number.
We’ll see what happens to the check we deposited!
September 15th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Same letter in my mail today. I guess they are now using Life Investors Insurance Company of America in Ia written on the Bank of New York out of Delaware. I looked it up and found the same as Barbara. Would like to have the 4988.00 and sock it back to them, but I am sure if the check clears and I can cash it then they have scammed someone else for the 4988.00 so that mine will cash.
September 15th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
I just received a check today from Life Investors Insurance Company for $4988 that would cover the taxes and funds delivery. These people are insane. I am not going to deposit the check. I am getting hit too hard by today’s economy to end up having to pay for these stupid people’s kicks.
September 23rd, 2009 at 1:01 pm
We received the same thing in the mail today. It was a plain white envelope without a return address and had Canadian postage on it. It comes from Life Investors Ins Co of America in the amount of $4,988.00.
The thing that threw me was the fact that there are so many different addresses listed for everything…nothing seemed to be located in one place or anywhere near the other. The tax was to be paid to someone in New York this time, though. Another thing that threw me was the fact that Life Investors Ins Co of America hasn’t been that since 10/2/2008…it is now Transamerican Life Ins Co.
For those wanting to know what to do with the check and the letter in an effort to put this to an end, I found a website that tells you, step by step, what to do. http://www.fraudaid.com/check_liability.htm (the thing to do is toward the bottom of the article).
Another thing to keep in mind when tempted to make the deposit is that it can take up to three years for a check to come back fraudulent. In the mean time, you’ve cashed the check, spent the money and forgotten it ever exsisted. If it should come back, your bank is going to hold you responsible, not the issuing party. They will turn to you for their reimbursement. Definitely do your research before making a deposit from an unknown source!
September 27th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
I to recieved a check from Life Investors Insurance Company of America.I deposited the check in my bank accout. They told me their would be a 5 day hold on it.I waited 5 days for the check to clear. Then it came back.I tried to call the agent listed on the letter for about 8 hours they finally answered the phone.I started to explain what happened and they hung up on me.Some things are to good to be true.
October 2nd, 2009 at 8:06 am
A citizen brought in a check and letter to my LE Office from AIG out of Washington State claiming thier name was pulled from a computer data base that they received this check for $4,985.50 from a consumer promotional draw as a customer to a number of American and Canadian stores. The check was the preliminary prize and being they had to pay a non-Canadian residential tax the check had to be cashed and the money needed to be wired to a tax agent Susan Moore in Le Duc Canada. The contact person, claim agent Diana Carlton based in Vancouver BC must have to use a cell phone to receive any questions about this. Hmmmmmm. BIG SCAM!! You cash the check and wire it to Canada and by the time the check clears the bank they already have the money and you end up paying the bank on the bad check. Most banks are savey enough to catch it before this happens. Be sure to speak with Law Enforcement or your bank before even thinking about following the directions in these letters and check you might receive. Worked a case a few years back that over a course of a month an elderly man was scammed out of $38,000.00 when he was to have won the Canadian Lottery and he had to wire tax money to Canada to claim his winnings. Never got a dime back as a rusult of it.
October 6th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
i got the AIG check. i never believe these things but we could really use the money right now. the checked looked real and i checked the water marks etc, so i decided to open a bank account with the check. knowing in the back of my mind it has to be a scam i spoke to some people who told me to call the postal service and attorney general tomorrow, well im online now and see this site and now i have my answer. i will see what happens to the check tho.thinking about it now why would they send the money that could have been sent directly to the tax agent. another thing is that no one is assigned a tax agent to pay taxes, you pay them to the goverment lol. i intend to call them tomorrow and mess with them a little….maybe play the dumb blonde and keep them on the phone for a long time. and by the way i called it a few minutes ago 10pm and it is a cell phone. my husband works for the newspaper and i used to so i am going to contact them and the local news stations and the FBI. no one messes with the hopes and dreams of people and their families in these tough times! good luck to all
October 7th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
what a bummer – i got all excited and started figuring out what bills I would pay. Oh well, I guess I will leave it alone and move on. I am happy I took the time to check it out online first – otherwise, I would have it in the bank by the end of todays business day. BTW – the company is AIG, the ‘claim agent’ is Sarah Thompson 778-318-9495 out of Canada. The tax agent is Camille Smith out of 9090 Denver Blvd, Jasper Canada. Total check amout 4950. Total tax to pay 4780. WTF – why?????
October 7th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
PS – want to know what happens to those who deposited the check…thank you.
October 11th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
I just opened an envelope with no return address, but enclosed was a check for $4950.00. This check looks real because it IS real but I’m sure if this was legit, the check would have come certified, and would have a return address. I have worked in the financial industry for more than 10 years and thought I had seen it all. My interest was peaked such that I considered havingy bank call to verify the funds are available, but fortunately I came across this website so I will not waste my time. My letter is exactly like one of the examples listed above. These SCUMBAGS! I wish they’d use their obvious creativity and intelligence to do good rather than harm. Isn’t there some crime called “intent to defraud”? Amazing. Everyone’s trying to get one over on someone else. GREED is the reason our economy is in the shape it’s in…don’t contribute to the problem by depositing the check, letting it clear, and trying your best to “get back at” these criminals. The only person you hurt in the long run is yourself and your neighbor. I guarantee the banks will find someway to make us all pay.
October 21st, 2009 at 8:51 pm
I receive the same mail and the company is GEICO with a check for $4980.00. Thank you for alerting many innocent people.
October 21st, 2009 at 8:59 pm
Just received the latest one, now it’s from GEICO.com with all of the same features as those listed thus far. I think I have it figured out though. The problem with everyone who is going to “outsmart the crooks” by just cashing the check and depositing the money in their own account—Once you cash the check, your checking account number is on the back of the check and that check is now sent back to the company where it was drawn upon. They will then come after you for the funds, because you deposited a fraudulent check. Whether it clears or not, the bank doesn’t care, because it may be a valid check, but when it comes time for it, they want their money back–since they didn’t issue it in the first place. Point is, if they sent you 4980 in the mail, you can cash it, your bank may say it’s valid, but when it is drawn from the Insurance company’s account to pay you, a red flag will be raised and they will be coming to you to pay back that money—it’s not rightfully yours, so don’t deposit it. Contact the Insurance company directly (mine said Geico.com) and they will tell you that it is a scam and you better not deposit the money–because you’re ultimately responsible for it. Forget the $250,000 (it never existed in the first place), you need to be concerned about the 4980 that you think you already have in your pocket because the actual insurance company will be coming back for it. DON’t CASH THIS CHECK—it’s got to be a scam.
October 27th, 2009 at 11:33 am
I got one of these letters this morning. Here are two scam-related sites that will be useful to determine that your ‘check’ is not real. Don’t deposit it or cash it. It isn’t real. Here’s the links: read them carefully.

If its too good to be true, it usually is.
Good luck with it.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Hey guys I just got the same check and thanks to this post you guys saved me a lot of embarrassment at the bank… I’m really thinking about getting “Help Me Howard” to take care of these assholes.
October 28th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

YaY! I’m RICH!! What a bring down to discover it’s a scam. I appreciate this site though, saved me a lot of hassle obviously. My scam letter is from Foremost Insurance Company out of Caledonia MI with a check for $3800 (of which only $2950 is due in taxes?) with a prize amount of $150,000.
Claim agent is George Benson, tax officer Mercy Spencer.
Time to shred it- O well.

Got my letter and check from “AIG Annuity Insurance Company”. Check is drawn on Mellon Bank, Delaware. Interestingly, my name is nowhere on the letter, only on the check. In the letter “Your name was attached with the serial #275665″, the same number another potential victim received from “TD Financial Trust”. The check looks real and they want you to cash it, but they want you to SEND THEM MONEY via MONEY GRAM or WESTERN UNION. DON’T DO IT! They will have YOUR money and their check will bounce. I am sending a copy of everything I received to my State Attorney General. I received this scam after signing up for “Google Easy Street”. Sent them $1.95 and 3 days later they charged my credit card $129 because “I didn’t cancel in time”. Don’t get caught up in this. Other scammers are still charging my card for other things that “I didn’t cancel in time” even though I didn’t even sign up for them. Read the fine print!! If it sounds too good…. you know what they say!

Howard,
I too signed up for “Google Easy Street” and cancelled immediately after reading about the $129.00! ‘Google’ still charged me the $1.95 that I simply decided to call “stupid tax.” Then, a few days later, 19.95 charge for MyReBayter.com and $49.00 was stolen from my acct as well from ImaxBancard! I called MyReBayter 1-(877)-204-0112 and was told the money would be refunded. Well it took a few weeks and after looking at my CitiBank acct today, I found they finally DID return the funds. However, I called ImaxBancard twice and spoke with a ‘David’ (manager) both times telling me ‘next week.’ I still haven’t seen a nickle from them. On top of all this I now get “Romance Tip” texts on my cell everyday! …girlfriend not too happy.
When I too got my infamous $4990.00 check from AIG I knew it was related to this “Google Easy Street” thing. I’m glad I found this site, NOTHING but trouble!!!
Lesson learned: NEVER give out bank info, acct info!
I thought I knew better but just trusted the ‘Google’ name too much.

I received a letter from the Foremost Insurance Company yesterday for 3800.00. I got excited for all of about five minutes, then it hit home that A) I didn’t remember entering any “drawing” and B) this had to be too good to be true. I’m glad I checked out this site. I won’t bother messing with it. I’m going to void the check and return it to the U.S. Postal Inspector, informing the USPS of the scam.
