Conversations With A Scammer – Real Scam Example!

In this article I will post a real conversation I have done with a supposed seller trying to scam me. I have known since his first reply he was a scammer, but the continued conversation was to show you some methods the online thieves are using. You will usually find such adverts on general forums (a piece of software assists them to post these spam messages to thousands of URL’s in a few minutes), on classified ad places like craigslist, your email and on b2b trading websites like alibaba. Always do your due diligence before you venture into any business transactions.

ME: Please provide a price list for your available items. Where is the item location? Do you accept escrow?

Thanks.

ME: I’d like to order 4 pieces of PS3. Is this good for europe electricity, or are the adapters for UK, US or JAPAN? Does it come with the 60GB or 30GB disk, what else is in the package?

I will pay you using escrow.

SCAMMER:Hello, ps3 is good for europe electricity.

it’s come with all the accessories in full package.

we receive payment via moneygram.

we dont accept escow.

reply with your shipping address and your contact phone number.

reply

ME: Sorry too much scammers around the internet, moneygram is not safe. I will only do the deal with escrow.

SCAMMER: Hello, i understand you, many scammer on internet they scammed me last week with some of $5000usd they ask me to ship for them and they receive the order and keep my money till now.

we do receive the system of paypal before but we stop it now.

if you can make your payment via moneygram we will ship your order and give you tracking number as soon as we confirm your payment.

mail me back with your full shipping address.

thanks

ME: If you do the shipping first then I can send you money via Western Union. I can’t send it via Money Gram because my country doesn’t have this system. If you were scammed for 5000$ than you can surely understand me why I don’t want to send the money first. I have absolutely no guarantee that you actually have the items and will send them to me. Or we do it the escrow way, this is safe for us both.

SCAMMER:hello, i really undersntad you to,

i dont deal with system of escrow.

if you dont have the system of moneygram then make the payment vie western union money transfer and we will ship out your order within 2working days you will recieve your order in your doorstep.

we have garrantee that as soon as we make the shipping we will give you trascking number to enable you to track your order.

reply with your full shipping address so i can give you the payment information.

thanks

SCAMMER AGAIN: hello, i am waiting for your urgent reply tomorrow is monday can i make the package tomorrow?

mail me back so i can ship the order tomorrow.

reply with your full shipping address and your contact phone number.

reply

ME:I’m sorry I can’t use western union, there is to much risk involved for me. I have no insurance to get what I paid for.

SCAMMER:hello, let me tell you every business is a game of risk, i can only do this if truly you want to buy the ps3, you pay for 50% up front and when you get the order you pay the balance of 50%. mail me in time so that we can make the shipping today.

your address for the shipping and your full receiver name and your contact phone number.

reply.

ME:It is a game of risk, but you have to minimize the risk as much as possible. You as a seller and me as a buyer. So to share the risk evenly we can use Letter Of Credit (The L/C is a guarantee, given by the buyer’s bank (ME), that they will pay for the goods exported, provided that the exporter(YOU) can provide a given set of documents(your ID, EMS, GLS or FEDEX tracking etc.) in accordance with clauses specified in the L/C and in a timely manner).

I am looking for a longterm partnership. I would be buying goods monthly, so I have to know with whom I am dealing with.

SCAMMER: this is a long processing which i dont accept, i have given you the best way which can be okay for two of us. think of this it take a long processing.

i dont do letter of credit for the item of less than $1000usd.

if it is up to $5000usd i can do so but with the order below that i can do such.

if we understnad eachother we can do a long time business.

i understand you try to understand me also.

reply

ME:I prefer to be safe rather sorry. I don’t mind if I wait for a long procedure for the first time in business with a new partner. I can order for 1000$.

SCAMMER:if you want to do letter of credit my order start from $5000usd.

i have try in all the way to make you trust in business you have to play the game which call risk.

i belief in risking, i want to risk also.

thanks for the consine

ME: If you would like to risk then you can send me goods in advance, after I receive them I will pay you via anything you like (western union, TT…). You of course say you’d like to risk. We can do the normal transaction of 4 PS3 like we agreed on the first place.

But, I can order for 5000$. I will send you 30% upfront via letter of credit, and then 70% after I receive the goods via TT. Okay?

SCAMMER: if truly you want to do business with me send $200usd so i can use it as shipping charge here, as soon as you receive the items you send my money.

if you agree with that reply

ME: I pay you 200$ and you send me goods for 5000$ and after I receive it I send you the rest? Is that what you mean?

SCAMMER: i mean for 4 ps3 pay $200usd as advance and when you receive the order you pay the balance.

mail me your shipping address if you agree on that so i can ship out the ps3 4pieces today.

SUMMARY

You could recognize this as a scam by numerous points. Each is important so be sure to watch for these as you do business online:

1. Price list. There is no way you could get these items for a low price like stated in the document. Now lets go deeper and use an example. Playstation 3 is $170. Amazon.com sells these for 599$. You are getting this item for 429$ less than from Amazon.com which by the way is one of the biggest online shops. Imagine the advantage of dollar power this big company has and now look at your company or individual business. I am sure you can’t come even close. So there is no way an item can be sold at a margin like this and be legit. Lets say you would buy 100 pieces of PS3 and you would be selling them at 549$ which would be a highly competitive price. Lets look at a total calculation without import tax or shipping.

100x PS3… Buying Total: 17.000$
100x PS3… Selling Total: 54.900$

This is impossible because PS3 sells like bread today and if this was true you could be a millionaire in half a year. If it looks to good to be true it probably is.

NOTE: Time of post is June 26th, 2007. If you are reading this article way in the future, check the retail prices of these items in June 2007.

2. Name of the company – Phone Trade Limited – name is too random and default

3. Company is supposed to be located in London, but as you can clearly see the choice of words and English language of the supposed sales department agent is very poor.

4. Seller is very urgent to get the transaction done. In every reply he wants my full shipping address, so the “deal” could be done as soon as possible and my money gone!

5. Payment method. He refuses all safe for buyer and seller alike methods. Even paypal is not safe!

6. When I asked about detailed item description, not much information was given.

7. First scammer said he accepted the Letter of Credit (L/C) as a payment method, but the order must not be less than 1000$. When I said my order will be for 1000$ he said I need to order for 5000$. When I tried to order for 5000$ he tried to sell me only 4 pieces again via Western Union so he wouldn’t use the L/C. Now which honest person would rather sell only 4 Playstations, when he could sell many more for the amount of 5000 Dollars. He was happy to get only 200$, of course if I were to send this money I would not receive the items.

same here, dude selling iphones for 150/piece

tells me to prove i got the money buy writing a WU transfer for his adress, but name of my friend, so he cant collect… and then send him the piece of paper i get from WU… then he sends the phones, and i change the name to his name…

    dont trust it :)

here is the last mail i got yesterday.. (27/01/2008)

    ————————-

    Again,

If you deposit the money in other name i can`t pick up the money but i will be sure that you are serious and have the money. If you prove me i send you immediately the package. That is my insurance.
After you deposit the money you give me the paper scanned from western union for i can check and if the payment is done and if all will be Ok i start immediately the delivery and in max 2-4 days you have the package at your home.
After you receive the package you check the phones! You will be given a 3 days inspection period from the day you receive the product at home. If you decide to hold the phones you go back at western union and your best friends or your husband (wife) name or your mother name in my name for i can receive the money and the transaction will be completed. if you will not be satisfied with the product, you will be able to send the product back through the same shipping company (we suport all the shipping taxes) and you can take the money back from the western union office.
You will NOT transfer the money on my name. Is a safe deal for you too. I receive the money when you change the name and you will change the name when the phones will be in your hands.
I am tired of unserious buyer who don`t really intend to buy and just want to play games. I only want to be sure that you have the money and don`t play games. I’m a serious seller and a fair trader and I prefer to deal only with a serious buyer. If you consider yourself one please e-mail me back so we can start our deal.
I will look for your email, so that we can move forward with this deal!
    Best Regards,

i am having an almost identical situation. the scammer sent me a scanned drivers license and passport with social security number. nobody in their right mind would send this information to somebody they dont even know. the inquiry was for a macbook pro listed at $1000. everything seemed legit except for the social security thing. when he told me he only accepted western union money transfer, i suggested a COD (cash on delivery). i explained that i would be able to inspect the item before i actually paid for it. the scammer then told me that western union was “completely safe.” i said i would refuse to pay with western union. then as they all do the scammer suggested that i pay half upfront and the other half once i recieved the item. in addition to the social security number and passport provided, there were some other dead giveaways that this was a scammer. 1. the terrible grammar skills
    2. the consistent request for payment
    3. the refusal of anything except for western union
    4. the item was listed in canada, the scammer told me it was to be shipped from Peoria, IL, and when i got the tracking number and reciept, it said it was being shipped from North Carolina.
    5. multiple facebook profiles; all with identical pictures but different locations
    6. i did an ip address trace for the emails i had been recieving. this was supposed to be somebody in Illinois. however, the ip address was based in Nigeria.

some advice to buyers; do some research on your seller. only buy from trustworthy sites. stay away from people who require western union as their only means of payment.

if you want to track an ip address, there is a guide and all the tools necessary here.

thanks for posting this. I recently experienced the opposite…i posted an ad selling an item and scam buyers started responding. I decided to respond back to the scammers by using some of the dialogue the scam sellers use (from your posting). might as well have a little fun with it and give them a taste of their own medicine. lol

Importing and exporting has turned into a risky venture with sites like alibaba being flooded withswindlers pillaging good people’s moneyand never communicating again. When web surfers begin looking into wholesale, they’re usually the first resource found. Awesome read though.

In my spare time, I enjoy toying with scammers. Playing with their emotions. Wasting their time. Getting their hopes up & convincing them that they found a true dumby & sending them on a plethora of wild goose chases to Western Union convincing them that I did in fact wire them money & when they email me back stating there was no money, I give them yet another excuse. Once I have used them up like a childs punching bag that slowly depleats in an unused corner of a room (after I send them to Western Union a good ten times) I finally let them off the hook, letting them know I knew from the VERY BEGINNING that they were scammers and played stupid the whole time just to use them and waste their time. I enjoy and relish in the thought of how they must of dreamed of outrageous shopping spree’s and new cars and all sorts of other things that they planned on doing with my money & once Im satisfied, I crush their entire world & expose the fact that they have been scammed themselves. Perhaps I didnt scamm them out of money (not my thing) but I did waste a good amount of their time, send their greedy assess to bed with excitement of money, thats still scamming them. Most of the time they email me back stating that they have cursed me or put voodoo on me (they dont know me lol) & even in some cases, I was told that they were contacting Law Enforcement on me! lmaoooooooooooooooo……………

Try it some time…..its very very amusing……of course, only when you’re bored, and want a good chuckle. Its up to you how long you string them along.

They get SO MAD at me when I tell them that I have known all along that they were in some filthy Internet Cafe, barefoot and didnt even have a computer of their own.

So yea, use em up. Toss em out.
