I bought a male and female devon rex cat for breeding purposes from Ruth Mushrush of peppershire cattery in Joshua Texas. The male was supposed to be a B blood type and he was actually an A which I didn’t need, I could of used a friends male. Both kittens were very sick upon arrival. I then decided to house the new female with a friend and treat her for her upper respitory rather then keep both sick cats here. I now had three devons, and three spayed and neutered house cats living in my home, all of which got sick from this male kitten. I did my best to keep him quarantined away from my cats but they still all got sick. This costed me hundreds of dollars on meds for everyone plus I ran hundreds of dollars of blood work on this male from Peppershire because he would not get better and would keep infecting everyone else. I have the vet bills to prove this.
I bought these kittens with the agreement of a kitten back on both when they were bred. I have my three girls, two of which are the champion girls living elsewhere so they don’t reinfect and i still have the sick male from Ruth (Peppershire devons) and at one point thought i would put him down but have decided to live with his special needs and knowing he wont be a long lived cat. I have had him neutered in the mean time.
I have not even asked Ruth for replacement on him, nor have I asked her for the money back. I simply asked if it was okay that I did not have to send her a kitten back on him, still honoring my commitment on the female. She agreed that would be fine, but now won’t send the papers even though the litters have been registered. She is now demanding 1200 dollars more when all I owe her is one kitten and it was her decision to not take a kitten back.
After being told papers were sent and came back five times, I knew I was not going to get those papers from her so I emailed every devon rex breeder within North America to tell them my story. She didn’t like that too much but what choice did i have? None!
After a year of fighting with her, she decides to send me a disclaimer now! I don’t think so, because of all of this I have decided not to breed cats. I told her I don’t even care about papers on the male even though I paid for a registered male, I just want the papers on the girl, that is all. She has brought this on herself and after emailing all the breeders I got back over 75 letters from breeders who knew not to deal with peppershire. We always find these things out too late. This report is not intended to insult or attack, it’s simply a warning and my experience. I hope to save others from the disappointment and expense of dealing with Ruth Mushrush and her cattery.
