Scammed by Jennifer Hampton

NOTE: Please look below this report for comments by the company, individuals, employees, ex-employees and victims, if there are any. They may contain invaluable and important updates about this case.

The following ad was listed on Craigslist on Sunday 07/05/09:

“For sale is a Wal-mart gift card with a $500.00 balance. I am currently in Vegas and won the gift card in a bingo raffle. If you are interested, I will be back in Detroit on Wed, July 8, 2009. I can deliver the card to you, mail the card to you, or email you the card number and pin. It is totally up to you. First come first serve!! I accept cash and paypal only! No exceptions!”

I emailed her Monday morning to see if the card was still available, where she promptly stated it was. She gave me her Paypal address and agreed to send the package via UPS with signature confirmation required. Within an hour, she emailed me again and provided a UPS tracking number. My package was scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday 07/08/09. I waited at home all day Wednesday and Thursday….of course, no package. After contacting UPS on Friday, I learned that UPS had never received the package. She apparently purchased a shipping label (so that she could provide tracking information) but never sent the item. I immediately went to Paypal to dispute the transaction (which is still pending). Paypal already had a hold on her account, so either someone filed a claim before me or she cancelled her account after taking my money.

For 4 days, she would not respond to my messages. I then informed her that since this transaction involved UPS, it was considered mail fraud and could be a basis for federal prosecution (covered by Title 18 of the United States Code, Chapter 63 – Mail fraud refers to ANY scheme which attempts to unlawfully obtain money or valuables in which the postal system is used at any point in the commission of the offense.)

She immediately emailed the following message, “I’m on the phone with Paypal to get them to refund your money. It’s a hold on the money now, and I don’t see the option to refund it. I cannot understand why you have not received your gift card. I left it at the front desk and they told me specifically that UPS would pick it up around noon. I am not like that. I’m so late responding to your emails because I have been so busy. I just haven’t checked them. I am so sorry about this. I am not trying to steal from you it’s not even in my character. If I cannot get them to refund your money by today, I will Western Union you cash money on Tuesday or Wednesday, I promise. Again I’m sorry for this…”

It’s been 6 days since she promised to refund my money and once again, I haven’t heard from her. She continues to post ads on Craigslist and update her blackplanet.com page, so I know she has access to the internet. She lied from the beginning…she was never in Vegas. She initially wrote that she dropped the package off at the UPS store; then she changed her story. What did she do, take her printer and UPS packaging to the hotel with her; how else could she have left the package at the front desk?

Her name is Jennifer Hampton. She also uses the name Jennefere Hampton. She is the author of the Beautiful Sins Series (http://www.amazon.com/Jennifer-Hampton/e/B002BOFJ4K).

Her fan site is http://jenneferehampton.com

Her paypal account is registered as a business account with the following address:
3737 Humboldt
Detroit, MI 48208
United States
However, this is the address of a women’s shelter that she “volunteered” at after the court-ordered community service for FTA (failure to appear) and unpaid tickets; she brags about this on her blackplanet.com page (www.blackplanet.com/mejennihuh2006).
She actually resides at the Parks at the Villages of Taylor in Taylor, Michigan.

She advertises many different items and services on Detroit’s Craigslist. Please do not fall for her scams. She is very polite and prompt in responding. She uses the following two e-mail addresses: mejennihuh2006@yahoo.com and jhampton48208@yahoo.com. She uses the following contact number on her ads: 734-306-2012.

Okay, this is absolutely ridiculous. I’ve been fighting this issue for almost two months now. Someone used my name, then made a false claim against me. I think I know who this is. This better not be those crazy lesbians who are harassing me because I’m straight and won’t sleep with them? You have mental issues, and you need to go get some help. Leave me alone, and stop posting my personal information on the net, and stop harassing me. Get a life. The police are investigating you for using my name to sign up for a bunch of crap, and if this lady is real… you are also going to get busted for stealing from her!
