Dear all, I’m writing to expose a major scam of which you should all be wary. Based on my experience in dealing with a variety of such situations, this is one case in which I think others may need some warning. On behalf of my company, I was recently evaluating various web-based desktop solutions available on the market. In the process, we were approached by a company called WebMySystems (http://www.webmysystems.com) actively pushing their product (“Webmyfiles”). Even more, they continuously hinted at investments in their company promising massive profits in return. It is a policy of our enterprise to do a thorough background check of everyone we are dealing with, especially if it comes to any potential investments.
These checks are performed with the involvement and assistance of specialized third parties, as well as our in-house security team. The results, which I summarize here, speak for themselves. Apparently, their “CTO” “Dr. Maxim Orlovsky” (whatever his real name and title are) is on the wanted list in his home country (Ukraine) for fraud, tax evasion and connections with organized cybercrime. We could not retrieve any information from authorities on his legal status in the UK, implying it to be extremely dubious: it is very likely that he is an illegal immigrant hiding from the Ukrainian police under a false identity. The background of “Michael Patrick Penny,” who provides cover to “Maxim Orlovsky” in the UK, is also highly suspicious. There are clear indications of his participation in fraudulent activities, as well as multiple charges for not paying for services and products ordered. While posturing as a “highly successful entrepreneur,” he is drowning in debt and had a Voluntary Arrangement with Creditors a few years ago.
The “development team” and the “support team” they mentioned during the meeting do not seem to exist at all, and even the origins of the product they market are uncertain. Having said all that, there is little reason to provide detailed assessment of the technical qualities of the product, but it is well below both current expected standards and the abundant competition. To summarize, in the opinion of our security team providing any confidential data to be handled by them and their “product” is about as secure as posting it on Ukrainian carders forums, and making any investments into such an enterprise is akin to investing into the “419 industry” to get your “million billion dollars within one year.” Hopefully this warning will save some of you the trouble of going through similar investigations yourself, unless you are making a detailed study of such frauds and want to add this stunning textbook example to your collection.
